Ka'u Coffee Trail Run Half Marathon
An fun, challenging half marathon benefiting a local charity.
The Ka’u Coffee Trail Run half marathon is an annual race held at the Ka’u Coffee Mill in late September each year. The entrance fees from the event benefit O’Ka’u Kakou, a local charity that promotes community service, culture, and welfare of the Ka’u region. (Kakou is a beautiful Hawaiian word that means inclusiveness, civic-mindedness, and concern for one another.)
The race route (which may change from year to year) tours around the plantations surrounding the coffee mill. The land is private, and is probably not open for running outside of the organized race. The terrain is primarily grass and mud from the surrounding ranch and farm lands, and features some burly climbs.
It was a fun event! Laura and I both had the good luck of ending up as technical winners for our age groups (since the faster runners of our genders and age groups took overall podium positions instead).
Charlie’s notes: Would totally run this again – a nice location, fun route, and good charity.
Laura’s notes: Run this race if you have the opportunity! A nice way to see this landscape that is typically not open to the public, and for a good cause.
